What are Max Home and Max Epic?
Max Home and Max Epic are both satellite-based Internet connectivity solutions, provided by Paratus Telecom– formerly known as Maxwell Technology. Both solutions are Satellite technology, that make use of satellites at geo-stationary orbits about the earth’s surface (at a height of approximately 36 000 kilometers) to provide you with reliable, fast Internet access.
The equipment installed at your premises communicate directly with the orbiting satellites and therefore require no towers, masts or terrestrial infrastructure.
The solution that will be installed at your premises , through which you will get access to the Internet, comprises of a satellite dish, a satellite modem and a wireless router. In cases where you require telephone connectivity( Max Epic only) for voice communications, a VOIP capable phone instrument will need to be supplied. This phone connects to the internet and makes use of data to create a voice call- refer to latency described below.

Line of sight is probably the most important aspect of the satellite broadband installation, because this determines how good a signal can be received.
Any blockages which cause a degraded signal impacts on the performance of the broadband connection. Failure to obtain clear line of sight during installation will result in a degraded signal, resulting in a poor, intermittent broadband service or no connection, and no service at all. This means that one will need to monitor the growth of vegetation and prevent the erection of obstacles that can block this line of sight.
With Max Home you will receive access to the Internet via the Hylas 2 Satellite , and with Max Epic via the Eutelsat 7E satellite. The majority of internet via Satellite bundles have a larger download speed than the upload speed, this is due to the fact that we expect you to retrieve more information from the internet than what you will be putting on the internet. All Speed profiles are up to speeds- meaning the services are shared. The speeds advertised are the maximum achievable headline speed, your actual achieved speed will be dependent on overall network congestion and availability.
The Max Home system gives you a free zone between the hours of 00H00 and 05H00 daily. Any internet data used during this time is not deducted from your allocated and paid for bundle. It is suggested that you make use of a scheduler that allows you to plan your “bulk downloads” for these periods.
Max Epic offers uncapped, unshaped data profiles which makes Free Zones unnecessary.
Any activity you perform on the internet uses some of your allocated data. It is true that the faster your internet connection is, the faster your data use. The most common large uses of data are as follows:
- Streaming of Videos
- Downloading of Videos
- Streaming Radio
- Downloading of Music Files
- On-line Gaming
- Social media web sites like Facebook
- Uploading and down loading of photos.
If you are a Facebook user it is important to note that every time you access Facebook it is very likely that there has been changes to the home page since you have last been on it, resulting in the downloading of all the new photos and content to your computer – thus using data.
All new smartphones have applications – apps- that run in the background- and while they are running – they use data.
The following list provides a guideline of the amount of data you will on average need for certain usage patterns.
- 1GB – 5 GB: Enough for 1 or 2 people doing basic web browsing and emails
- 5GB – 10GB: Good for a small family researching school projects, and social networking
- 10 GB to Uncapped: Ideal for the download of small music and files, video streaming and browsing
What does the Data bundle mean?
This is the amount of data allocated to your profile. Below is a high level description of what you can do with your data or what can you get for your data. The numbers provided are approximate figures only.
So what does it get you then?
1 GB of Data will allow you –
- Approximately 100 hrs, of web surfing, or
- About 50 hrs. on Facebook, provided that no large volumes of photos are added, or
- About 11 episodes of your favourite TV Series, or
- About 93 Youtube plays, or
- About 41000 average sized e-mails, or
- About 12 hours of Skype, or
- 1 Movie.
5 GB of Data will give you 5 times the above or a combination there of.
10 GB of Data will give you 10 times the above or a combination there of.
Approximate data usage per Activity:
- 1 Hour of web surfing viewing web pages uses about 10 MB of data on average,
- 1 Hour of Facebook without any video streaming will use about 20 MB of data,
- Streaming half an hour of your favourite TV series – about 90 MB of data, on average,
- Watching an average Youtube video will use approximate 11 MB of data,
- Sending and receiving 100 emails will use approximately 2.5 MB of data
When you run out of data, you can simply contact us to upgrade you to the next bundle or procure additional Boosters or top-ups.
VOIP is an abbreviation for Voice over Internet Protocol and makes use of a normal Internet connection for the transmission of voice calls, which means that your normal voice conversation is converted and transferred as data over the internet. Maxwell offers a VoIP service over the Max Epic system, allowing you to make telephone calls across the Internet.
It is important to note that you need data available on your Internet service in order for your phone to work.
You pay separate for your telephone line and all calls made – it is not included as part of your monthly data bundle payments.

Latency refers to delays experienced in data transmission due to the enormous distances the data packets travel, carrying your data from your premises to the satellite and back to where the link terminates on earth.
Fact: The satellite orbits the earth above the equator at a height of around 36 000 kilometers. This implies a round trip of 72 000 km’s before the data packets reach the earth station and only then can it be routed through the terrestrial part of the network.
Users experience this as a slight delay on VoIP conversations. This delay may, however, be impacted by how busy the Internet is. Please keep in mind that in general, the Internet is a best effort service.
Typical Latency expected on a Satellite based network is between 650 ms and 800 ms
- Broadband VSAT based solutions are a Fair share service. There are defined sharing or contention ratios on each profile.
- Broadband bandwidth data rates are maximum rates. The actual speed experienced by a user can be lower, especially at peak time, and depending of network congestion. There is no warranty or Service Level Agreement (SLA) for minimum speed. The up to data rate, or the maximum rate, is known as the MIR , with the minimum achievable speed known as the CIR. The CIR is the MIR divided by the contention ratio. The actual achieved throughput rate is dependent on the contention at that moment in time when browsing the internet, and is subject to change continuously.
- Wireless coverage is limited to the actual coverage of the supplied equipment within the constraints of the environment into which it is installed.
- Voice over Inter Protocol (VOIP) solutions via VSAT is on a best effort basis, and that latency can have an impact on the quality of VOIP calls.
- Data is required for VOIP to work.
- In terms of lightning protection it, must be emphasized that due to the unpredictable nature of lightning, no lightning protection system can be 100% effective. Lightning protection equipment is not included in the proposal or solution quoted. It remains the responsibility of the homeowner/customer to ensure the equipment is suitably protected (or insured) against a lightning strike.
- It is the sole responsibility of the homeowner/customer to ensure that the outdoor equipment is suitably and adequately earthed.
- It is the sole responsibility of the homeowner/customer to ensure that all furniture or equipment is moved so as to allow the installation team unhindered access to all required areas to complete installations. Should Maxwell/Paratus Telecom or their representatives be required to move any equipment or furniture, Maxwell/Paratus Telecom or its representatives are fully indemnified against any damage resulting from the action.
- The responsibility of the Maxwell/Paratus Telecom accredited reseller/installer ends with the activation and testing of the terminal.
- Network integration and connecting to the customer’s equipment are not included in the installation cost.
- Any network security, other than what is provided by the relevant satellite solution network, is the responsibility of the customer.
- Telephone and fax line rentals exclude costs for actual calls made.
- Maxwell/Paratus Telecom provides a Service Assurance Plan that covers the call-out fee of an technician plus 24/7 telephonic support when required. This is an additional charge which is added to the monthly data bundles charges
- Installation workmanship carries a 3-month warranty.
- Hardware has a factory guarantee of 12 months from date of installation.
- Customers opting for a public IP must implement their own firewall to secure their site from external intrusions or attempts of intrusion. As a general means of protection, a firewall is suggested in all cases.
- It is the Customers responsibility to verify whether the applications they use or are planning to use works via satellite links. Some applications require configuration changes in the client/server for the system to work properly and reliably via higher latency links. VSAT latency varies typically between 600 ms and 700 ms.
- Due to these higher latencies, the response of typical first-person shooter games played via satellite Internet will not be comparable to that played on short latency platforms such as ADSL.
- Consumer broadband solutions via satellite do not effectively support applications requiring VPN and IPSec tunnels.
